Tips for Washing a Toddler's Best Friend & a Giveaway!

There's something special about toddlers...the way they play so energetically, the way they chat to themselves in their own little world, the way they love their friends and family with such innocence and awe and also the way they can make a mess while doing all of the above!

I have twin toddlers and that means a whole lot of washing! Throw in toilet training and I can see you shaking your head knowingly as you imagine the number of loads I am doing each week!

I was recently sent a bottle of the new Dynamo Maximum laundry liquid to review and to be completely honest with you I was a little hesitant. I usually use my own homemade laundry liquid to cut down on costs and because Ruby (my sensory sensitive twin) cannot handle most of the strong smelling powders on the market.

It's been a long time since I used a commercial laundry liquid but I wanted to try this one as my DIY version just isn't getting the red dirt stains out of our clothes and towels at the moment. I have had to face facts that sometimes you need something a little more powerful!

We are landscaping and regular readers will be familiar with pictures of our mounds of red dirt dotted around the backyard...because we love to play outside it is inevitable that clothes will get stained...socks are the worst as they are always in gumboots and somehow filled with dirt and rocks by the end of the morning!

Another reason I needed a better performing washing liquid is because Tara has a special friend called Dolly (I know...very original right?) and she goes everywhere...she has the best time outside but my goodness she can get smelly and grubby!

She loves to play outside as much as Tara and Ruby do and yet she doesn't get a bath every night! I do wash her quite regularly (although this is a emotional little endeavour!) but she just hasn't been looking any cleaner lately and I have been a bit embarrassed to take her out in public!
The final straw came when she was 'painting' and her foot became an awful shade of red...Tara was beside herself and wanted Dolly clean NOW! Gulp...

See that mat in the picture below? That's the colour that covers everything lately and it is so hard to get out for some reason.....so i was more than ready to try the new Dynamo Maximum and see whether it could perform on these sort of tough stains.
What a challenge...just look at those socks!

So for the past few weeks I have been using the new Dynamo Maximum on all of the washing.....including poor Dolly. I have been pleasantly surprised to realise I haven't had to wash anything a second time or presoak first.

I  purposely didn't presoak Dolly as I wanted to see the results after one wash with Dynamo Maximum's new advanced formula. She definitely came out cleaner and brighter and most of the paint was gone apart from a small outline.

I've also noticed that some of the older red dirt stains have been removed from our clothes and also the hand towels (which see some tough action believe me!) It's not a miracle worker...socks still have the remnants of a red dirt stain but nothing like they have been looking after a wash with my homemade detergent!

Dolly and the rest of the washing came out smelling lovely and fresh with none of the overpowering smell I find many washing powders and liquids have. It doesn't seem to have affected Ruby's sensory sensitivities...in either touch or smell which is important to me and Tara accepted Dolly back after a quick sniff and cuddle!

You can see in the before and after photo below that Dolly is looking a lot cleaner after her wash with Dynamo Maximum. She was definitely brighter and smelt so clean without being overpowering!

Even the Elmo twosome came out cleaner and brighter after their turn through the wash!

I began by using the recommended 2 capfuls for a large soiled load in a top loader machine but I did actually cut this down to 1 capful by the end of  a week of washing...The results were just as clean and bright so i was happy to use less liquid!

I like that it is a liquid and begins dissolving and mixing with the wash straight away...avoiding that clumpy residue I can often get with powders when doing a large load! The liquid was easy to use and measure and I noticed I didn't get a lot of liquid runs down the side of the bottle after using this cap...something that really annoyed me when I had used liquid laundry detergent bottles previously!

If you are interested in giving it a try on some of those tough family stains yourself  Dynamo Maximum is available in 1L (RRP $9.99) & 2L ($16.49) bottles, in front and top loader variants in all leading supermarkets across Australia.

I don't plan on stopping my toddlers having fun outside even if there is red dirt everywhere.....I think it is much less stressful just to have a decent stain removal product and the new maximised Dynamo certainly meets that expectation from my personal experience.

A few things I have learnt when trying to wash that favourite toddler toy are....

1. Don't wait to long before washing as the smellier the security item gets the more likely it is they will reject the 'clean' one!

2. Get them involved in the process...we talked about giving Dolly a wash in the machine and Tara helped measure out the Dynamo liquid and pour it into the washing machine. She then handed me the pegs to hang Dolly on the line.

3. If your child is home when you wash the toy offer 'status updates'....whenever Tara began to get concerned that Dolly was still on the line we wandered out to see her and reassure Tara that she was ok but not quite dry yet.

4. Don't use a strong smelling detergent or you may risk rejection of the security item and a very long night ahead!!

5. Treat them with care...I like to pop Dolly into one of those lingerie bags before throwing in the machine to avoid any washing accidents. I don't have the time to handwash but I find the bag usually works well!

6. Give your child lots of hugs and reassurance while their special friend is drying....having a back up/duplicate toy is of course a fantastic idea!

If you are like me and enjoy seeing your toddlers indulge in some messy fun with their friends (real or not!) without the worry of  getting their clothes clean then I have the perfect giveaway for you!

Weekend Wanderings....Rainbows at Home....

Sometimes I'm really glad when we don't have to 'BE' anywhere on a weekend. It was Mother's Day here  but i was happy just to be able to potter around inside and also get outside with the girls in between rain showers.

There were no expectations of grand gestures...it was the simple joys that i remember from this Mother's Day weekend.

A pretty flower picked in the garden for Mummy........

Some very special homemade cards crafted with love....

A little dress sewing was finally completed.... even though they are such a simple design, finding the time to finish projects is still difficult with the toddler twosome apparently needing to be within touching distance of me at all times lately!

I can't remember...when does that stage finish? Just between us I'm a little over it now !

There was lots of help picking a small pumpkin from the garden, removing all the seeds and chopping ready to roast for a yummy pumpkin soup! It was actually a really helpful activity for Ruby to practice her pincer grip (which needs some work)...picking up slippery pumpkin seeds is harder than you might think!

There was a lazy Saturday breakfast of fruit, yoghurt and oat bran smoothies and Miss Teen went a little overboard with the blueberries! (Yes i am still working on that promised smoothie recipes post!!)

We pulled out some favourite blocks and the girls enjoyed arranging them in patterns on the tray and naming all the colours as they held them up to the light. Easy rainy day fun!

We were very excited to see how quickly our seeds are growing...hopefully we will get a chance to plant and mulch again in the next few days!

The spinach, rocket and beans are thriving and the broccoli, eggplant, cauliflower, peas and tomatoes are all doing well....I love Winter crops...they just seem to do so much better rather than the Summer ones which have to cope with our hot, humid weather! Have i mentioned i LOVE Autumn!!

I did a little reorganising of  play areas....i keep trying different arrangements of furniture that will suit both our family home and the needs of setting up for Family Day Care. We don't have a separate space available just as a dedicated play room so i am incorporating little child friendly spaces throughout the house.

I'll be sharing some of my tips for setting up a family day care business at home soon as i know there are some readers also at this stage...perhaps we can compare ideas!!

The girls' favourite activity this weekend was also the simplest! I found this silicone bath mat in our $2 shop and knew it was just the perfect for their current obsession with marbles!

Marble Matching

Toddler Marble Fine Motor Activity

So very simple....i just lay the mat on their table so that one twin could work at each end, added 2 trays of marbles (trust me...one tray just isn't worth the drama!!) and let them figure out what they wanted to do!

Toddler Marble Fine Motor activity

These aren't great photos I'm afraid (very hard to photograph these mats i realised!)  but you get the idea...the suction caps that are used to hold the mat in place in the shower or bath made perfect sized holes for their marbles.

Toddler fine motor activity

The were quick to begin filling the holes with their marbles and it kept them busy for quite a while.

I was really pleased with how well the activity kept Ruby's interest as many fine motor activities don't interest her for long as she has difficulty sitting and concentrating for the length of time required and can get frustrated very easily.

Picking up the marbles and placing them into the holes was a simple, repetitive action that she seemed to find calming and it really worked her fine motor muscles and grip.

Fine motor marble game

Magically our weekend started with a beautiful rainbow and would you believe we saw another one on Sunday afternoon too. Perhaps a gift for all the Mum's out there as a rainbow can keep a toddler interested for AGES i found out!!

I hope all the Mum's (and all the Mum's to be and the special women trying to become Mum's) had a lovely day however you celebrated...I know i was just thankful to be exploring rainbows at home......Have a wonderful week!

Recycling Deodorant Bottles for Fun!

I've been collecting empty roller deodorant bottles for a little while now because i wanted to share a  favourite activity from my early days of child care with the toddler twosome.

It's a fantastic frugal activity for practising fine motor skills and also for those children that don't really like getting their hands to messy with paint!

I just love recycling items from around the house and turning them into creative learning opportunities full of fun...there really is no need to buy expensive products to have a little fun with your toddler at home!

Toddler Fine motor Fun

After using the last drops of roll on deodorant simply slide a butter knife in between the side of the roller and container as shown below....it's quite easy really, you just have to wiggle it in place and then it is a simple matter of popping out the ball!

Give it a thorough wash and then fill with whatever paint you like. I used some watered down acrylic but i have also previously just used water paint and even my Cornflour paint . You don't want it to be too thick though so it is a good idea to add a little water too or the roller will stick.

Push the roller ball back onto the bottle, give it a shake and you are good to go!

Toddler DIY Roller Bottle Activity

All ready for a little roller painting fun...it's a good idea to do a few test runs first to get the paint flowing before offering otherwise it can prove difficult to use the first time for toddlers...

Toddler recycled painting

So many opportunities for fine motor fun and exploration as they push down and try to roll, play with the roller ball to see how it works and putting the lids on and off is lots of fun too!

Recycled fine motor fun

Ruby took quite a while to decide which one she wanted to use....mainly based on the packaging i think! She was happy to begin painting without touching the paint for quite a while...as she got a little braver she began to explore the roller and get a little more paint on her fingers each time.

It really is a great activity for those sensory sensitive children who don't like to get paint on their fingers though as there is no real need for them to have to touch it and yet they can still be creative and watch their patterns forming....

The toddler twosome enjoyed creating lines, dots and splatters with their roller bottles.....they made lovely colourful prints i think.

Ruby was overjoyed when she realised she could make splatters with the bottle by using it in a different way...once she started we went through an awful lot of paper i can tell you!

Toddler Fine Motor Activity

Tara preferred to make lines and splodges.....

Dabbing was lots of fun and took lots of control to do....

This is Ruby's 'face'...i can see it...can you? She was very proud of it!

A fun, easy and frugal activity which left us with lots of masterpieces to share with family and adorn our walls.....I hope you give it a try!
